Phantom Foul Costs Mercy Women's Soccer in 1-0 Loss
Box Score A phantom foul in the box with less than a minute to play cost
the Mercy College women's soccer team today, as the Mavericks
dropped a 1-0 decision at Georgian Court (N.J.) University. The
Mavericks fall to 2-6 with the non-conference loss, while GCU
improves to 6-3-1.
Mercy had dominated the majority of play throughout the game on
the rainy afternoon, taking 12 shots to GCU's ten.
Yet, with 35 seconds to go in regulation, Julia
Camp (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) was whistled for
a foul in the box, which gave GCU's Kelly Lyons a penalty
kick. Lyons was no match for Mercy keeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay
Shore), and the hosts ran away with the 1-0 win.
DiLegge made four stops in goal, as did Shealyn Sullivan, the
Georgian Court keeper.
Mercy returns to action at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday,
October 9, at 12:30 p.m.
