In the first set, the Pioneers came ready to play, and
jumped
out to an early 11-4 lead. A Mercy timeout and subsequent kill by
sophomore Kassy Phillips (Marcellus,
N.Y./Marcellus) gave the Mavericks a spark. Mercy
roared back behind four kills by freshman Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine
Bush), but could not overcome the Pioneers'
attack. Shayla Hixson led C.W. Post with five
kills, as the visitors took the first set 25-19.
In the second, junior Crasheena Ward (Danbury,
Conn./Danbury) had a kill to cut the early Pioneer
lead to 5-3 and keep the score close. But C.W. Post would use a 7-0
run midway through the set to seize control. Geony
Fisher would have four of her 11 kills for C.W. Post in
the second set.
The third saw the Pioneers hit .423 to run away with the 25-11
win.
For the evening, Gebhardt paced Mercy with nine kills while
hitting .304. Senior Mirlusca Montes (Lima, Peru/Senor de la
Misericordia) led the Mavericks with eight digs, while
sophomore Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside,
N.Y./Oceanside) recorded 11 assists.
As a team, the Pioneers hit .305 for the match, behind a
game-high 11 kills from Fisher. Amanda Ostapow
recorded 24 assists, and Stephanie Coufal had 16
digs.
