Andrea Nash's Penalty Kick Goal Lifts Mercy Women's Soccer to 2-1 Double Overtime Win
Box Score The Mercy College women's soccer team took advantage of an
Andrea Nash (Katonah, N.Y./Somers)
penalty kick in double overtime to beat St. Thomas Aquinas College
today, 2-1, in an East Coast Conference matchup. Mercy advances to
3-6 on the season, and is now 1-3 in the ECC. STAC falls to 1-8
overall, and 0-4 in the ECC.
The Mavericks were able to take advantage of STAC mistakes
throughout the game, with the game-winning penalty kick coming as
a direct result of a yellow card to STAC's Kristie Sama. For
the game, nine cards were issued, resulting in four ejections, two
for each side. Arguably the biggest ejection came in the first
overtime, when Jeanette Gibson, the STAC keeper, was sent off.
The game's first goal came at the 57:23 mark, when Tori
Matt put the hosts on the board. Mercy knotted the game when Nash
scored the first of her two goals on the day. Oddly, both goals
came on penalty kicks. Nash now has three goals on the season.
Late in regulation, the Mavericks had a golden chance to earn
the win, but Jackie Karras (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown
East) had a shot ring off the post.
Statistically, Mercy dominated play, taking more shots (16-9),
and more corners (11-2). In addition to the multiple cards issued,
Mercy was stopped for 16 fouls, while STAC was whistled for 7. Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay
Shore) made five stops in goal for Mercy.
The Mavericks return to action on Mon., Oct. 11, heading back to
Rockland County to face Nyack College at 2:00 p.m.
