Mercy Women's Basketball Beats Georgian Court, 71-62
The Mercy College women's basketball team got 25 points
from junior Jasmine Williams and won its first
game of the year, winning at Georgian Court University 71-62 on
Tuesday night. Mercy is now 1-2 on the nascent season, while GCU is
0-1.
Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms
Academy) added nine rebounds and three assists to
spark the Mavs. Classmate Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Lackey)
added 20 points, five assists, and eight steals.
The game was tight early, with GCU building a three-point lead.
A three-pointer from junior Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md./Stillman
College) quickly erased the deficit, knotting the
score at five apiece. Minutes later, freshman Alexis Monserrate (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust
Valley) would hit a jumper at the 12:53 mark, giving
Mercy the 10-9 lead. Mercy would build a four-point lead before the
hosts roared back, taking a 15-14 lead with 9:11 to play in the
first half.
A 7-0 run for Mercy gave the Mavericks the lead at 21-15, a lead
Mercy would never again relinquish.
Mercy led by as many as 16 points with just over one minute to
play in the half, with Jasmine Williams scoring eight straight
points.
In the second half, GCU would rally to cut the lead back to as
few as two points, but the Mavericks would hold off the Lions
attack.
Senior Ashley Borofsky (Southington,
Conn./Southington) added seven points and nine
rebounds in the game, while Beaulieu finished with nine points and
four caroms.
The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, completing a
two-game New Jersey road trip, facing off at Felician College at
7:00 p.m.
