Mercy Women's Basketball Falls to Dowling in ECC Opener
Mercy College women's basketball dropped its East Coast
Conference opener today against Dowling College, 66-53. With
the loss, the Mavericks drop to 2-3 overall, 0-1 ECC, and Dowling
picks up its first win, to become 1-2 overall, 1-0 ECC.
The first half started out tight. Junior Talia
Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md./Stillman College) scored on a
layup and was fouled. She then converted from the line to
give the Mavericks a 7-4 lead. The Golden Lions pushed back
and went on a run, scoring 12 of the next 16 points, to take the
19-11 lead. Mercy called a time out to regroup, and came out

Borosky (Southington, Conn./Southington) gave the
Mavericks the 27-25 lead. Borosky would have 11 points for
the half. Baskets were exchanged until Mercy again took the
lead when Aysha
Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) hit a
jumper to make the score 32-31. Dowling's Connie
Simmons answered back with a jumper to give the Golden Lions the
33-31 lead. Ann
Butehorn (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had two
blocks to end the half, and keep Mercy within one going into the
second.
The beginning of the second half saw more tight play. Two
hit free throws by Aysha Williams gave Mercy the 37-33 lead.
Dowling scored six straight to take the 39-37 lead. A jumper
by Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Lackey)
evened the game at 39. The score would again be tied at 47,
and then Dowling started to pull away. Fueled by turnovers
and misses by Mercy, the Golden Lions went on a 13-2 run, to make
the score 60-49. During the stretch, the Mavericks would go
over five minutes without scoring. Dowling went on to take
the game 66-53.
Aysha Williams led Mercy with 14 points and nine
rebounds. Borosky had 11 points and six rebounds.
Butehorn led all players with four blocks.
The Mavericks return to action on Nov. 29, when Post travels to
Dobbs Ferry.
