Mercy College women's basketball dropped its East Coast Conference opener today against Dowling College, 66-53.  With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 2-3 overall, 0-1 ECC, and Dowling picks up its first win, to become 1-2 overall, 1-0 ECC.

The first half started out tight.  Junior Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md./Stillman College) scored on a layup and was fouled.  She then converted from the line to give the Mavericks a 7-4 lead.  The Golden Lions pushed back and went on a run, scoring 12 of the next 16 points, to take the 19-11 lead.  Mercy called a time out to regroup, and came out strong.  A layup by Ashley Borosky (Southington, Conn./Southington) gave the Mavericks the 27-25 lead.  Borosky would have 11 points for the half.  Baskets were exchanged until Mercy again took the lead when Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) hit a jumper to make the score 32-31.  Dowling's Connie Simmons answered back with a jumper to give the Golden Lions the 33-31 lead.  Ann Butehorn (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had two blocks to end the half, and keep Mercy within one going into the second.

The beginning of the second half saw more tight play.  Two hit free throws by Aysha Williams gave Mercy the 37-33 lead.  Dowling scored six straight to take the 39-37 lead.  A jumper by Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Lackey) evened the game at 39.  The score would again be tied at 47, and then Dowling started to pull away.  Fueled by turnovers and misses by Mercy, the Golden Lions went on a 13-2 run, to make the score 60-49.  During the stretch, the Mavericks would go over five minutes without scoring.  Dowling went on to take the game 66-53.

Aysha Williams led Mercy with 14 points and nine rebounds.  Borosky had 11 points and six rebounds.  Butehorn led all players with four blocks.

The Mavericks return to action on Nov. 29, when Post travels to Dobbs Ferry.
