Mercy Volleyball Rallies for 3-1 Win over Nyack
Box Score The Mercy College volleyball (4-24) team defeated Nyack College
today, 3-1, in the final home game of the season. The
Mavericks won the first and second sets, 25-17 and 25-19,
respectively. The Warriors (9-13) pulled together to win the
third set, 25-22, but Mercy fought back to win the fourth and
deciding set, 25-20.
In the first set, Nyack held the lead early. The Mavericks
responded with three kills in a row by Rebecca
Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine
Bush), and Kassy
Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus), bringing the
score to 11-10, and the Mavericks within a point. Phillips
held serve for six straight points to give Mercy the 14-11
lead. The Mavericks scored eight of the final nine points, to
take the set 25-17.
The Mavericks got off to a strong start in the second set.
A kill by Gebhardt gave the serve to Mercy, and Mirlusca Montes (Lima,
Peru/Senor de la Misericordia) held serve for three
straight points, giving Mercy the 8-3 lead. After a series of
kills and Mercy errors, the Warriors got back in the game, and tied
the score at 13. Play would remain tight, but Mercy began to
pull away at the end. A kill by Nicole
Pepe (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow), gave the
Mavericks the 18-17 lead. Mercy would go on to score eight of
the final ten points, and win the set 25-19.
The Warriors refused to quit, and came out strong in the third
set, taking an early 4-2 lead. Mercy then scored eight of the
next nine points to take the 10-5 lead. Play continued, and
Anna Bailey held serve for three straight points for the Warriors,
tying the game at 11. It was back-and-forth the rest of the
way, with Nyack going on to win the set, 25-22.
In the fourth set, Nyack got out to an early 6-3 lead, but Mercy
pushed back, scoring eight of the next ten points, to take the lead
11-8. The Mavericks played a strong attack game and would
lead the rest of the way. Mercy took the set 25-20.
For the match, Gebhardt hit .315 on the strength of 26 kills.
Lynch had 33 assists, and Phillips had three and a half blocks. All
were match highs. Moana Masoniai paced the Warriors with 16
kills.
The Mavericks travel to Molloy on Nov. 9 for the final game of
the season.
