Mercy Men's Basketball Loses to STAC 68-60
Mercy College men's basketball dropped their East Coast
Conference matchup with St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday
afternoon, 68-60. With the win, STAC improves to 2-5,
including 2-2 ECC, while the Mavericks, still looking for their
first win, drop to 0-7, including 0-4 ECC.
The first half saw tight play throughout. A layup by
junior James Mindingall (Randolph,
N.J./Randolph) would give Mercy the 9-6 lead.
Six straight points by STAC's Justin Brown put the Spartans
up by three. Brown would lead all players with 22 points and
16 rebounds. Mercy pushed back, and a layup by senior
Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Monsignor Scanlan)
brought the score to 18-14 giving Mercy the four point lead, which
would be the Mavericks biggest lead of the game. The Spartans
then went on a seven point run to take the 21-18 lead. STAC,
who shot 57.1% from the floor, would lead 38-33 at the half.
The Mavericks came out strong to start the second half going on
a 10-4 run, including six points by senior Manny
Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), to take the
43-42 lead. It was the Mavericks last lead of the day.
STAC's Kadeem King would score a jumper on the next
possession to take back the lead, and the Spartans would hold on to
the lead the rest of the way and take the game 68-60.
The Mavericks' scoring was led by Garcia, whose 17 points
included going three-for-five from three-point range. He also
grabbed five rebounds. Mindingall had 16 points and led Mercy
with six rebounds. Wilson added 13 points with four
assists.
The Mavericks will travel south for their next two games, when
they head to Pensacola, Fla., for the West Florida Christmas
Classic. Mercy takes on the host on Dec. 30, and then closes
out the year with a New Year's Eve matchup with Valdosta
(Ga.) State.
