Mercy Softball Falls to Felician College 6-4
The Mercy College softball team continued its Florida trip by
dropping a 6-4 contest to Felician College in a game played at the
Cocoa Expo in Titusville, Fla. The setback leveled the
team's record in the Sunshine State at 3-3.
Mercy got on the scoreboard right away as they scored two runs
in the top of the first. Sophomore third baseman Jackie Roebuck (Walden, N.Y./Chapel
Field Christian) led off the game with a single. Two batters
later, Paige Cauley (Stratford, N.J./Iona
College) ripped a single of her own and the Mavericks had two
runners on base. Cleanup hitter Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Bristol
Central) then cleared the bases with a two-run double, giving the
Mavericks a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
The lead was short lived, however, as Felician retaliated for
four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 advantage, and
then pushed across two more runs in their half of the fifth to take
a 6-2. Mercy's bats came alive again in the sixth.
Freshman Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore,
N.Y./John F. Kennedy) laced a double to lead off the top of the
frame for the Mavericks. Junior Krissy
Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison) matched Johnstone's
double with one of her own, plating the freshman and bringing Mercy
within 6-3. Two batters later, Cait
Rohme (Patchogue, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) lifted a
sacrifice fly to the outfield which scored Lacik. Neither
team scored again as Felician held on for a 6-4 win.
Both Curry and Cauley led the way for Mercy with two hits
apiece. Methot drove in a team-best two runs and Rohme went
the distance in the defeat; surrendering just three earned runs
while recording one strikeout.
The Mavericks head north to face Chestnut Hill College in
Philadelphia on the 19th and return home to Dobbs Ferry
to face Southern New Hampshire University on March 22nd.
