MERCY FALLS TO BENTLEY
IN FIRST EVER HOME LACROSSE GAME, 15-7
It was an historic day for Mercy College on Wednesday as the
women's lacrosse team hosted its first ever home game in a
contest against Bentley University. In the game, the
previously undefeated Mavericks fell to the Falcons by a score of
15-7, in Bentley's season opener.
After Bentley jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Mavericks scored
their first home goal ever as Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William
Floyd) scored off a feed from Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay
Shore). The Falcons registered the next four tallies to take an 8-1
lead before Mercy struck again as Jamie McPartland (North Massapequa,
N.Y./Farmingdale) scored the first of her three goals to bring the
Mavericks within 8-2.
Following the halftime intermission, Mercy come out on fire and
went on a three-goal run after Bentley took a 9-2 lead early.
Brianna Horn (Wantaugh,
N.Y./Kellenberg) and Marissa Hurley recorded the first two
tallies in the run, before McPartland picked up her second goal of
the game off of an assist courtesy of Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Easport
South Manor). McPartland's register brought the score
to 9-5 before Bentley scored the newt two goals. McPartland
then found the net off a hookup from Marissa Hurley to bring Mercy
within 11-6. Finally, Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin)
closed out the scoring for the Mavericks with a free position goal
at the 11:07 mark.
With the defeat, Mercy's record sits at 2-1 while the
Falcons are 1-0. Mercy's women's lacrosse team
next sees action on Saturday, March 13, as they travel to Delaware
to take on CACC opponent Wilmington (Del.) College. The
opening draw is slated for 1pm.
