Wild Finish Not Enough for Mercy Men's Lacrosse as
Mavs Lose 10-9
Box Score
The Mercy College men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-9
decision today to the Penguins of Dominican (Cal.) University in a
driving rain in Mountain Lakes, N.J. Mercy falls to 1-3 on the
season, having lost its last three straight games. Dominican is now
2-5 on the season, as the Penguins conclude an East Coast road
trip.
In a cold driving rain with winds gusting to over 45 miles per
hour, both teams played sloppily early, with the ball finding the
turf often. Midway through the first quarter, Mercy was able to
punch through, as hometown hero Sean Wallin (Mountain Lakes,
N.J./Mountain Lakes) lit the lamp. Dominican responded barely two
minutes later, with Reed Upson tying the game at the 7:02 mark.
Freshman Alex Martello (Montville,
N.J./Montville Township) put Mercy up again with an unassisted goal
at 5:30. The remainder of the first period was quiet, and the Mavs
led 2-1.
Dominican, playing its fourth game in the last six days,
continued sloppy play, and Mercy took advantage. Mercy took command
with three consecutive goals to start the second and take a 5-1
lead. Frank Henenlotter (Lynbrook,
N.Y./Lynbrook), Martello, and Mike Marzocca (North Babylon,
N.Y./North Babylon) each scored unassisted goals in that stretch.
Dominican rallied with three straight of its own, and Mercy led 5-4
at the half.
The winds picked up, and the rain continued.
To start the third, Dominican began man up, taking advantage of
a Mercy unnecessary roughness penalty as the second half expired.
Matt Polizzi scored just seconds in, scoring one of
Dominican's two goals in the period. After three, Dominican
now led 6-5.
As the final period began, Dominican put more pressure on Mercy,
scoring at the 12:17 mark to take a two-goal, 7-5, lead. Marzocca
responded quickly, cutting the lead back to one at 7-6. Mercy
continued to press, but Dominican remained staunch defensively.
Mercy began taking chances, and Dominican was able to
counter-attack. The Penguins rattled off three straight goals in a
1:16 span, including goals just 17 seconds apart, and the game
seemed out of reach for Mercy.
But John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown,
N.Y./Lakeland) scored to cut the score to 10-7 with 1:45 to play.
25 seconds later, Martello took a Marzocca feed and cut the lead to
10-8. Martello again scored with 1:02 to play, and the Mavericks
were on a roll. But the Mavericks would get no closer, as a wild
finish was not enough to carry the day.
For the game, Martello had a game-high four goals, while
Marzocca had a pair of goals and an assist. Leading Dominican was
Kyle Mitchell, who had three goals. In goal, T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale,
N.Y./Farmingdale) made six saves for Mercy, while Dominican's
Sam Darrow made nine stops.
Mercy will host Franklin Pierce on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at SUNY
Purchase.
