The Mercy College men's lacrosse program started slowly
and rallied, but still fell short, losing 8-6 to Franklin Pierce
University. FPU remains undefeated at 3-0, while Mercy falls to
1-4. Two of Mercy's three losses have come by two goals.
The Ravens jumped out early, scoring the first three goals of
the game. Freshman John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown,
N.Y./Lakeland) scored an unassisted goal to stem the tide. But the
Ravens popped another, and took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
To start the second, John Thearle (Levittown, N.Y./Island
Trees) took a Sean Wallin (Mountain Lakes,
N.J./Mountain Lakes) pass and scored, cutting the lead to two
goals. FPU retaliated by scoring three straight, only to have Mike Marzocca (North Babylon,
N.Y./North Babylon) score with just 24 ticks remaining in the half,
and the Ravens took a 7-3 lead into the break.
Goalie T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale,
N.Y./Farmingdale) made ten stops during the first 30 minutes,
having faced 22 shots.
The third quarter saw Mercy more aggressive, and finally broke
through with 33 seconds to go, cutting the lead to 7-4. FPU then
lit the lamp with six seconds remaining in the third, and the score
was 8-4 with just 15 minutes to play.
Alex Martello (Montville,
N.J./Montville) scored at the 10:17 mark to cut the lead to 8-5.
Mercy carried play, taking 11 shots in the fourth quarter. Marzocca
got his third goal of the game with just under four minutes to
play, but the Mavericks would get no closer.
For the game, Marzocca had three goals, with Martello,
Fitzpatrick and Thearle the others. In goal, DiCarlo made 16 saves.
Mercy next faces ECC foe Mercyhurst (Pa.) on Saturday at SUNY
