The Mercy College softball team (6-4) swept a doubleheader today
from Chestnut Hill (Pa.) College, winning 5-1 and 9-5. Winning
pitchers were junior Shanna Hicks (Marlboro,
N.Y./SUNY New Paltz) in game one, and Alex
Oakes (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) in game two.
In game one, the game was a tight affair until the Mavericks
blew
it open with three runs in the top of the seventh. Leadoff hitter
Jackie Roebuck (Walden, N.Y./Chapel
Field Christian) reached base and scored three times, sparking the
Mavericks.
In the first inning, Roebuck walked and scored on a Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Bristol
Central) single, as Mercy took a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, the Mavs
took a 2-0 lead, as Roebuck singled to leadoff the inning, and
advanced to third on an error and a sacrifice. Paige
Cauley (Stratford, N.J./Iona College) knocked in
Roebuck, and Mercy led 2-0.
In the seventh, once again Roebuck led off the inning and
reached base, once again via base on balls. Junior Kim
Curry (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) and Methot each
singled, loading the bases with one out. After an Ashley Johnstone (Bellemore, N.Y./John
F. Kennedy) line out, junior Krissy
Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison) doubled to center,
clearing the bases. The Mavs now led 5-0.
Chestnut Hill responded with a single run in the bottom of the
seventh, but it was not enough and Mercy won 5-1. Hicks allowed
only four hits in the game to Chestnut Hill, three of which came in
the seventh inning.
In game two, Chestnut Hill jumped all over Mercy pitcher Alex
Oakes early, scoring four runs in the first inning and another in
the second. Down 5-0, the Mavericks came alive at the plate.
In the top of the third, Mercy scored three runs. Once again,
Roebuck led off the inning with a walk, followed by a Curry single
and a Cauley walk. Suddenly the bases were full of Mavericks with
no outs. Methot and Johnstone each hit sacrifice flies, and Mercy
had two runs across. Lacik then reached on an error, and Cauley
scored an unearned run as Mercy cut the lead to 5-3.
The top of the fourth was more of the same for Mercy, though
this time five hits produced four runs and Mercy now led 7-5.
Mercy then pushed across solo runs in the fifth and seventh
innings for the 9-5 win.
Oakes allowed eight hits and five runs, only one of which was
earned, in seven innings.
Mercy next plays on Monday, March 22, hosting Southern New
Hampshire in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for
3:00 p.m.
