The Mercy College women's lacrosse team played in its
second consecutive one-goal game, this time losing to Chestnut
Hill, 14-13, in Philadelphia. Mercy had beaten Ramapo (N.J.)
College 15-14 on Thursday.
Mercy is now 3-2 on the season, while Chestnut Hill improves to
1-1.
In today's game, Chestnut Hill began the scoring just over
a minute into the game, only to have Brianna Horn (Wantagh,
N.Y./Kellenberg) knot the game at 1-1 just 2:06 in. The Griffins
took a 2-1 lead before a Mercy scored four straight to take the 5-2
lead. Freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport
South Manor) scored the equalizer, then Jamie McPartland (North Massapequa,
N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal sandwiched between two Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William
Floyd) goals.
Chestnut Hill responded with its own four-goal run before Mercy
retaliated with a five-goal run to take a 10-6 lead. Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay
Shore) scored the first two, followed by a McPartland goal and a
pair by Horn. Chestnut Hill struck once more before the half
expired, and the score was 10-7 at the intermission.
In the second half, Chestnut once again scored the first goal of
the half, this time just 54 second in. CHC scored again, and
suddenly the lead was down to 10-9. Horn scored her fourth and
fifth goals of the game, with a Griffin goal in between, and Mercy
extended its lead to 12-10. Chestnut hill then recorded three
straight goals, taking a 13-12 lead with just 8:59 to play.
Hurley tied the score at 13-13 with 6:02 to play, and tensions
mounted.
With about two minutes remaining in regulation, Mercy had
several good scoring opportunities, but could not capitalize.
Chestnut Hill then cleared the ball, setting up last-minute
heroics. With just 24 seconds to go in regulation, CHC's
Kelly McKay scored an unassisted goal, claiming victory for the
home team.
On the day, Horn led the Mavs with five goals. Hurley recorded
three, McPartland and DiLegge a pair each, and Sullivan one. In
goal, Lauren Mateja (King of Prussia,
Pa./Upper Merion) made 12 saves.
Mercy takes a bit of a break, with the next game coming a week
from today. Lancaster Bible (Pa.) College travels to New York on
Friday, March 26. The 7:00 p.m. game will be played under the
lights at SUNY Purchase.
