The Mercy College baseball team split a pair of games today at
the University of Bridgeport. UB won the first, 6-4, with Mercy
taking the nightcap, 9-7. Mercy is now 4-6 on the season, while UB
is 2-4. The teams will play two more games on Sunday, March 21, at
the Harbor Yards complex in downtown Bridgeport.
In game one, Bridgeport jumped on Mercy starter Kenny
Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster CC) early, scoring twice in
the first and again in the third, taking a 3-0 lead. In the top of
the fourth, a Julio Torres (Harlingen,
Tx./Harlingen) single plated Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) , and the Mavs were on the board. Tyson then retired
the Purple Knights in order to bring the Mavericks to the plate in
the fifth.
Mercy loaded the bases to start the inning on a hit batsman, a
single, and a walk, before UB made a pitching change. After a pair
of strikeouts, Michael Ferrante (Long Beach,
N.Y./Long Beach) drove in a pair with a single to center and the
score was tied at three, but not for long.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bridgeport pounded out five hits and
scored three runs, to once again take the lead. In the top of the
sixth, Mercy again threatened. Senior Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees) had an RBI groundout to pare the lead to 6-4.
The Mavs would get no closer, and that was the final score.
Tyson took the loss with four-plus innings pitched, allowing
seven hits and five runs, all earned. Ferrante had three hits with
an RBI.
In game two, Mercy took control early and never let go. In the
top of the second, Mercy took advantage of three walk and an error,
by adding two hits, to plate four runs. Muscarella had a two-run
single with the bases loaded in the inning.
UB got a pair in the bottom of the inning, and a solo run in the
third, to cut the lead to 4-3. Bock then drew a bases-loaded
walk in the fifth to extend the Mercy lead to 5-3. Each team would
then score single runs, setting up a wild seventh inning.
In the top half, Mercy sent eight batters to the plate, scoring
three runs. Once again, Bock drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI. A
double by junior Matt Walsh (Staten Island,
N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) plated two runs. In the bottom of the
seventh, UB made life interesting, scoring three of their own runs
on four hits, but it was not enough, and Mercy gained a split on
the afternoon.
Junior Keith Kraig (City Island, N.Y./Mt. St.
Michael's) earned the win with 4.1 innings in relief.
Muscarella had three hits in game two, and scored as many runs,
from the leadoff position in the lineup. Torres also had three hits
with a pair of RBI.
The teams have three more games in the series, with the next two
being played as a doubleheader on Sunday, March 21. The games were
originally scheduled as single games on Sunday and Monday, both at
Mercy, but because of field conditions and the threat of rain for
Monday, both games will be played at Harbor Yards. First pitch of
game one will take place at noon.
