Seeing action for the first time in nearly a week, the Mercy
College softball team dropped a doubleheader to local rival Pace
University on Thursday, 8-2 and 12-4. Pace improves to 8-4, while
Mercy drops to 6-6. The doubleheader was played in Briarcliff, N.Y.
In game one, junior Shanna Hicks (Marlboro,
N.Y./SUNY New Paltz) took the loss, hurling 5+ innings. She carried
a no-hitter into the fifth inning, despite allowing unearned runs
in the bottom of the first and third innings. In the fifth inning,
she got into real trouble, allowing three hits, including a
three-run homerun.
For Mercy, junior Chelsea Methot (Bristol,
Conn./Bristol Central) doubled in the first inning, sending
freshman Courtney Butler (Islip, N.Y./Islip)
home. Junior Steph Owsiany (Edison, N.J./Edison)
doubled to leadoff the top of the eighth, and scored for the
Mavericks' second run.
In game two, junior Cait Rohme (Patchogue,
N.Y./Suffolk CC) struggled to find the plate in the third inning,
allowing seven earned runs while getting no outs. Freshman Alex
Oakes (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) entered in
relief, and allowed three more runs.
Methot had a pair of hits and scored as many runs. In game two.
Freshman Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y./John
F. Kennedy) had a triple, scored, and drove in two runs.
Mercy is next scheduled to face Queens (N.Y.) on Saturday, March
27, in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
