The Mercy College baseball team won its home opener over
Caldwell College, 9-1, in a game played at the Mercy College
baseball field on Wednesday afternoon. Mercy improves to 5-8
on the season (1-3 ECC) while the Cougars drop to 5-10 (1-1 CACC).
On the mound, sophomore Charles DeHart (Staten Island,
N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) threw five shutout innings to pick up
the win. He scattered four hits and struck out three.
The game started out ominously for the Mavericks as Caldwell
loaded the bases in the first inning. But DeHart induced
Jorge Ynoa to hit a comebacker that led to a double play by way of
the plate. This was a sign of things to come for Mercy.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second, when
back-to-back RBI singles from catcher Marc
Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) and
second baseman Michael Ferrente (Long Beach,
N.Y./Long Beach) gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. Mercy added
to its advantage in the very next inning, where four runs came
across on seven walks and a sacrifice fly from third baseman Julio Torres (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen
South).
The Mavericks began the sixth with a 6-0 advantage. After
the first two outs were recorded, Mercy loaded the bases on two
singles and a hit batsman. Torres came up with the bases
loaded and ripped a two-RBI single back up the middle, giving the
Mavericks an 8-0 lead. Torres drove in his fourth run of the
game when a fielder's choice in the eighth pushed Mike Gianzero (Highland Mills,
N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) across the plate. Caldwell was able to
squeak out a run in the ninth to avoid the shutout.
The Mavericks baseball team completes a two-game home stand
against CACC opponents when they host Felician College on Friday,
March 26. The first pitch is scheduled for 3pm.
