Mercy Men's Lacrosse Earns First ECC Win, Beats WJU 11-6

Boxscore

The Mercy College men's lacrosse team scored eight consecutive goals en route to winning its first East Coast Conference contest in history this afternoon, winning 11-6 at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, W. Va. The Mavericks snap a six-game losing streak and improve to 2-6 (1-3 ECC), while WJU drops to 2-5 (2-2 ECC).

Freshman Frank Henenlotter (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) led Mercy with four goals, including back-to-back tallies to end the second quarter.

Wheeling Jesuit opened the game's scoring just 18 seconds into the game. Justin Albro grabbed the groundball off the initial faceoff and scored an unassisted goal to put the hosts up 1-0. It was the only time WJU would lead in the game. Alex Martello (Montville, N.J./Montville) would tie the game with an unassisted goal shortly thereafter. James Bugeya (Lakeland, N.Y./Lakeland) scored his first goal of the season with just 54 ticks remaining in the first quarter, and Mercy led 2-1 after the first.

The second quarter was dominated by Mercy. The Mavericks managed nine shots in the session, with four finding twine. Martello scored his second of the game, followed by a John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) marker. Henenlotter then hit two straight, and Mercy led 6-1 at the half.

The third quarter saw Mercy jump out to an 8-1 lead on goals by Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and Henenlotter. Wheeling Jesuit would score three straight to end the quarter to make it interesting, cutting the lead to 8-4. WJU would score just seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 8-5, but they would get no closer.

Wheeling Jesuit began to play with desperation, taking 12 shots in the final quarter, but freshman netminder T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) was up to the task, making six of his 15 saves in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

In addition to Henenlotter's four goals, Martello added three. Fitzpatrick added a pair of assists to his goal, while Sean Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) contributed a pair of assists.

Mercy, playing its inaugural season of competition, has now won its first East Coast Conference game in history. The Mavericks had lost thrice earlier in the conference, which is the premier conference in Division II.

Mercy will host Dominican (N.Y.) College on Wednesday, March 31, as 12 noon, at SUNY Purchase.
