At Post University, Mercy College (5-10, 1-3 ECC) lost a pair of
baseball games by one run, falling 4-3 and 6-5.
In game one, Post took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. In the
top
of the sixth, Mercy scored three runs on only one hit, a leadoff
Marc Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) single to right, a pair of walks, and a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs and the bases loaded,
junior Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) hit a batter with a pitch, forcing home the winning run.
Matt Forman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown
North) and Keith Kreig (City Island, N.Y./Mt. St.
Michael) each threw a pair of shutout innings in relief.
In game two, Mercy scored twice in the third, and once again in
the fourth, to take a 3-0 lead. Post scored five in the bottom of
the sixth on four hits and an error, to take the lead. In the top
of the seventh, Dern walked and scored on a fielder's choice
to cut the lead to 5-4. Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa,
N.Y./Plainedge) then doubled to score Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees) and the game was tied. In the last of the
seventh, Post managed two hits with two outs, plating the
game-winning run.Kenny Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster
CC) threw four innings of shutout ball, striking out six while
allowing just a pair of hits.
Mercy has a busy week ahead, playing at Bridgeport Monday, at
Adelphi Tuesday, then at home against Dowling on Wednesday.
