MERCY SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON IN FLORIDA WITH SPLIT AGAINST EASTERN UNIVERSITY

The Mercy College softball team began the season with a doubleheader against Eastern (Pa.) University and earned a split. After dropping the season opener 16-6 in five innings, the Maverick s rallied for a 1-0 win in game two. Both games were played in Titusville, Fla.

In Game One, Shanna Hicks (Highland, N.Y./SUNY New Paltz) took the loss in her first appearance in blue and grey.

At the plate, juniors Paige Cauley (Stratford, N.J./Iona College) and Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) each had a pair of hits. Cauley drove in a pair of runs, while Methot drove in one. First year Courtney Butler (Islip, N.Y./Islip) drove in a run as well.

In Game Two, junior Cait Rohme (Patchogue, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) threw the complete game shutout. Paige Cauley drove in the game's only run.

The Mavericks will play Northwestern at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning before facing Carlow University at 3:00 p.m.
