Women's Lacrosse Stays Perfect, Beats Holy Family

The Mercy College women's lacrosse team jumped out of the
gate with two goals in the first two minutes of the game today and
never looked back, beating Holy Family (Pa.) University 14-5 today
in front of 55 fans at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Mercy
raises its record to 2-0 in its inaugural season, while HFU falls
to 0-1.
Jamie
McPartland (North Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) led
the game off for the Mavericks with a goal just 84 seconds in, on a
pass from Julie
Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin). Freshmen Marissa
Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) scored 15 seconds
later, and Mercy was on its way.
Hurley and Darnulc scored to give Mercy a 4-0 lead before Holy
Family was able to respond. The Tigers would put forth back-to-back
goals to cut the lead to 4-2, before Hurley scored her third goal
of the half to give the Mavs a three-goal cushion. HFU would tally
once again before the intermission, and Mercy took a 5-3 lead at
halftime.
To start the second session, Mercy again jumped out quickly,
posting four consecutive goals to reassert dominance of the game.
The Tigers would once again put forth back-to-back tallies, this
time cutting the lead to 9-5.
Mercy would then score the game's final five goals for the
14-9 win. Brianna
Horn (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg) would score the final
two goals, both coming in the final three minutes of the game.
For the afternoon, Hurley led the Mavs with five goals and two
assists. McPartland added three goals and one assist, while Horn
would finish with three goals as well. Darnulc added a pair of
tallies, while Brittany
Ott (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) scored her first goal of
the season.
Between the pipes, Lauren
Mateja (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) made seven
saves to keep Mercy perfect.
Mercy will host Bentley on Wednesday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m.at
SUNY Purchase, in the first ever home game in program history.
