Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Southern Connecticut

The Mercy College baseball team split a pair of games at Southern Connecticut this afternoon, losing the first game 3-2 before taking the second game by the same score. Mercy is now 1-2 on the season, and will head south to Ft. Pierce, Fla., next week.

In the opener, junior Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy Trinity) was the hard luck loser, pitching well in 4.1 innings. He gave up just one earned run while striking out four. Junior Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) had a two-RBI single in the third inning to put the Mavericks on top 2-0.Mercy struck out 16 times on in the game.

In the nightcap, Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) game Mercy a 2-1 lead with a bases loaded, two-RBI single in the fourth. SCSU would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, only to have freshman Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) put Mercy up for good in the top of the eighth  with a single to drive in the game's winning run.

Kenny Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster CC) earned the win with five innings of relief pitching in which he struck out three and walked none.

The Mavericks next play Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
