The Mercy College baseball team rallied from behind twice to
take a 7-4 win at Dowling this afternoon. Junior Matt
Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) was
one of the heroes, with a pair of two-run hits in the game. Sharing
the spotlight was classmate Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy
Trinity), who threw 5.1 innings of no-hit relief to earn the win.
The Mavericks got on the board first, when a Marc
Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North)
sacrifice fly scored junior Michael Ferrante (Long Beach,
N.Y./Long Beach) in the top of the second. In the bottom half,
Dowling evened the score, before tacking on a pair of runs in the
third to take a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, Walsh drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded
single to tie the score for Mercy.
But once again, Dowling responded and retook the lead. Mercy
then tied the game yet again when Julio Torres (Harlingen, Tx./Harlingen
North) drove home Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees) in the seventh.
In the eighth, Walsh had his second two-run basehit of the game
to put the Mavericks up for good.
Marsar earned the win, while Billy
Dring (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) picked up his third
save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Dowling series continues on Friday, with the Golden Lions
making the return trip. First pitch in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., is
scheduled for one o'clock.
