The Mercy College baseball team dropped a pair of games at
Molloy on Saturday afternoon, 7-5, and 4-0.
In the opener, Mercy (9-16; 5-8 East Coast Conference) scored
one run
in the top of the first, but Molloy (17-16; 10-4 ECC) responded
with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. They added
two more in the second, and three in the fourth, to take a 7-1
lead. The Mavericks rallied in the fifth inning, plating four runs,
but it would not be enough.
To start the game, Mercy got the first three batters on base, as
freshman rightfielder Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) got hit by a pitch, junior first baseman Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa,
N.Y./Plainedge) reached on an error, and junior centerfielder Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St.
Peter's Boys) singled up the middle. Senior third baseman Julio Torres (Harlingen, Tx./Harlingen
South) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and the Mavericks were
on the board.
Starter Charles DeHart (Staten Island,
N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) got hit hard, allowing six hits and
four walks in 4.1 innings. Seven runs were scored, six of which
were earned. Freshman Tommy Cummings (Coatesville,
Pa./Bishop Shanahan) threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
In the fifth, nine Mercy batters came to the plate as the Mavs
rallied. Big hits in the inning came from junior Michael Ferrante (Long Beach,
N.Y./Long Beach), who singled home a run, and senior Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees), who had a two-run double.
In game two, Mercy had its best opportunity to score in the
first inning, loading the bases with just one out, but Molloy was
able to get out of the inning unscathed. The Lions got off to a
quick start in their half of the inning, as leadoff batter Carmine
Pellechia singled, stole second, then stole third, and scored on an
error. Molloy then scored twice more in the third, and once again
in the sixth for their four runs.
Lauricella reached base three times in the game on a pair of
hits and a walk.
Junior Keith Kreig (City Island, N.Y./Mt. St.
Michael's) threw all six innings, allowing six hits and six bases
on balls. He took the loss.
The series continues on Sunday, as Molloy travels to Dobbs
Ferry, N.Y., for a noon start.
