Eight different Mavericks players recorded at least one of the
10 hits as Mercy slugged its way to a 10-2 victory over Queens
College in an East Coast Conference game played in Flushing, New
York, on Wednesday. Outfielders Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) and Matt Walsh (Staten Island,
N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) each had two hits.
Mercy scored two runs in the without recording a hit. After
Bock, Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees) and Walsh walked to load the bases, both Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa,
N.Y./Plainedge) and Julio Torres (Harlingen,
Texas/Harlingen South) scored a runner with sacrifice flies.
Mercy extended their 2-0 lead in the top of the third as Torres
drove in a run with a fielder's choice to make the advantage
3-0. The next batter, Michael Grassano (Valley Stream,
N.Y./Valley Stream South) lifted a two-run homer. Mercy added
two more runs in the fourth off of an error and an RBI single from
Torres. Mercy entered the sixth-inning leading 7-0.
In the sixth, the Mavericks pushed two more runners across the
plate as Torres drove in his fourth run of the game and senior
catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) ripped an RBI single that scored Lauricella to give
Mercy a 9-0 advantage.
The nine runs were more than enough for starting pitcher Kenny Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster
C.C.). Tyson pitched six innings and gave up just one
run. He walked two and struck out five to earn the win.
He was relieved by Stephen Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) and Chris Mignoli (Floral Park,
N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).
With the win Mercy's record improves to 11-18 overall
(6-10 ECC), while Queens now holds a 10-23 mark (5-16 ECC).
These two teams return to face each other on Friday, April 16 in a
game played in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. The first pitch is scheduled
for 3:30 pm.
