Lauricella's Walk-Off Single Helps Mercy Defeat Queens 5-4

Senior Greg Lauricella (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) ripped an RBI single to right field to drive in Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) with the winning run in a 5-4 come from behind victory over Queens College in the bottom of the ninth.  Mercy scored three times in the eighth and twice more in the ninth to erase a four run deficit to earn the dramatic victory.

Sophomore pitcher Charles DeHart (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) took the start and pitched four innings allowing just one earned run.  He was relieved by freshman Tom Cummings (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) who also threw four innings and surrendered just one run.  Senior reliever Matt Mareno (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) pitched a scoreless ninth to record the win.  The Knights scored a run in the first, two in the fourth and one more in the eighth to take a 4-0 advantage.

Mercy was shutout until the bottom of the eighth when catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) led off the inning by getting hit with the pitch.  He later came in to score on a fielder's choice from Bock.  Junior outfielder Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) drove in Bock with a single and senior Julio Torres (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen South) drove in Lauricella, who had walked.  The Mavericks headed into the ninth inning trailing 4-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, the first two batters made outs and senior Vinny Tesoriero (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) reached on an infield single.  He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Bock followed him with a walk, which put runners on the corners.  When Bock tried to take second, the catcher threw to third and overthrew the third baseman scoring Tesoriero and advancing Bock to third.  The next batter was Lauricella and he won the game with a walk-off single to right.

In the game, Lauricella, Walsh, Torres and Tesoriero had two hits a piece.  Dern was one-for-three with a double.  In Mareno's lone inning of work, he struck out two batters.  With the win, Mercy improves to 12-18 (7-10 ECC) and Queens falls to 10-24 (5-17 ECC).  Mercy has won the two contests in the five-game series.  The Knights and Mavericks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 17 in a doubleheader starting at noon on Mavericks Field.
