The Mercy College women's lacrosse team capitalized on a
13-goal first half to defeat Lake Erie College, 18-7, and even its
ECC record at 2-2. In a game played at Purchase College on Saturday
afternoon, the game featured two of the nation's top five
scorers in the Storm's Meredith Howe and Mavericks'
freshman Marissa Hurley (Shirley,
N.Y./William Floyd). Each student-athlete scored three times, but
it was Hurley who had more help in the victory.
Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute and a half of
the game, as Julie Darnulc (Baldwin,
N.Y./Baldwin) and Jamie McPartland (North Massapequa,
N.Y./Farmingdale) tallied goals. LEC's Allison Trombetti cut
the lead to 2-1, only to have Mercy respond with a goal by Hurley.
The teams traded goals,
with Mercy never yielding the lead. The Mavericks led only 4-3 at
the 19:59 mark, then went on a 9-0 run to the half with a 13-3
advantage.
In the second half, Mercy extended the lead to as many as 12
goals at one point.
For the Mavericks, freshman Brianna Horn (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg) led
all scorers with five goals. Classmate Kerry Goodnight (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport
Blue Point) found the back of the net four times, while McPartland
recorded a hat trick. Midfielder Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport
South Manor) once again posted a very strong game, with a goal and
three assists to go with three ground balls, two caused turnovers,
and six draw controls.
Between the pipes, freshman netminder Lauren Mateja (King of Prussia,
Pa./Upper Merion)made seven saves.
As a team, Mercy scored 18 goals on 32 shots. The Mavericks were
successful on 12 of 17 clear attempts in the game and won 19 of the
26 draw controls taken. Mercy improved its overall record to 6-4,
while Lake Erie College now owns a 5-3 ledger.
In East Coast Conference play, Mercy is now in sixth place at
2-2. Lake Erie and Molloy are seeded higher than the mavericks,
each owning a 1-1 record in the conference.
The Mavericks next play on the road at C.W. Post on Wednesday,
April 21. The next home game for Mercy is Saturday, April 24, as
they host Bridgeport at Purchase College under the lights at 7:00
p.m.
