Mercy Baseball Falls to Queens 5-4
The Mercy College baseball team lost a close 5-4 game to Queens
(N.Y.) College today in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. Mercy is now 12-19
overall. 7-11 in the East Coast Conference, while Queens is 11-24,
6-17 in the ECC.
Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning when Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) drove in both runs with a bases loaded single. In the
second inning, Mercy added a run when Matt
Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys)
singled home Marc Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley
Stream North).
Queens plated a pair in the top of the third, cutting the lead
to 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks. The score remained that way until
the top of the seventh, when Queens added another two runs, taking
the lead at 4-3. The Knights added a single run, the eventual
game-winner, in the top of the seventh.
The Mavericks rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one
run. Freshman Andrew Bock (Malverne,
N.Y./Valley Stream North), who been hit by a pitch to lead off the
inning, came around to score. Mercy would leave the potential
game-tying run stranded on second base as the game ended.
Junior Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy
Trinity), who came in to pitch the seventh inning, took the loss.
Steve Merslich (Flushing, N.Y./Francis
Lewis), who started the game, threw the first six innings,
scattering five hits while allowing just two earned runs.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at Queens College on
Sunday, April 18.
