Mercy Baseball Drops Season Series to Queens

Game 1 Linescore

Game 2 Linescore

The Mercy College baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader, 3-1 and 6-5, at Queens College on Sunday, dropping the season series to the Knights 3-2. Mercy is now 7-3 and in fifth place in the East Coast Conference, while Queens is now 8-17 in the ECC and in seventh place.

In the first game, Mercy managed just two hits, but kept the game interesting. Starting pitcher Keith Kreig (City Island, N.Y./Mount St. Michael's) threw only 3.2 innings. After cruising through the first two innings, he gave up three runs on four hits in the third inning. Queens would make those runs stand up.

Mercy threatened in the fifth, putting runners on base via two walks, but could not score.

In the sixth inning, Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) got hit by a pitch, and came around to score on a Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, N.Y./Island Trees) triple.

Junior Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy Trinity) went 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while senior Matt Mareno (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) pitched a scoreless sixth inning, striking out three batters in that inning.

In game two, Mercy scored in each of the first three innings, taking a 5-1 lead.

In the first inning, senior Julio Torres (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen South) hit into a bases loaded fielder's choice to drive home a run. In the second, three hits yielded three runs, with the big blow coming off the bat of Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys), who drove home a pair with a single. In the third, Matt Buesser (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) drove home Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach).

Reigning ECC Pitcher of the Week Kenny Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster C.C.) could not make the lead hold up, as he allowed three runs in the fourth, and another in the fifth. In 5.1 innings, he allowed nine hits and five earned runs, striking out four. Billy Dring (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) came in to pitch the seventh inning, and walked the leadoff batter, who came around to score the game winning run with only one out.

Mercy returns to action on Tuesday, April 20, opening the C.W. Post series on the road.
