The Mercy College baseball team lost a 2-1 decision to Dowling
College today at Mavericks Field. The game was well pitched on both
sides, as both pitchers threw complete games. All three runs
scored in the game were unearned.
Dowling scored both of its runs in the first inning, when a
seeing-eye single by Joe Candela scored two runners.
Mercy scratched across its lone run in the bottom of the fourth,
when an RBI single from catcher Marc
Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) drove
in Michael Ferrente (Long Beach, N.Y./Long
Beach) who reached on an error earlier in the inning.
Senior pitcher Kenny Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster
CC) hurled a gem, throwing all nine innings, scattering just four
hits and the two unearned runs. Tyson struck out six batters
to extend his team best to 27. The southpaw was masterful on
the hill, retiring 19 consecutive batters during a stretch in the
game. He was also helped by some sparkling defense as the
Mavericks escaped an eighth-inning jam, by having shortstop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
NY/Island Trees HS) throw home on the back end of a double steal to
get pinch runner Joel Duverge at home. In the ninth inning,
it was third baseman Ferrente who turned an unassisted double play
to get out of a bases loaded jam.
Marc Rutledge went the distance for Dowling, striking out four,
picking up the win. Tyson was the hard luck loser for the
Mavericks. The Golden Lions are now 11-11 overall, (6-6 ECC),
while Mercy holds a 6-11 mark, (2-4 ECC).
The two teams will meet again on Saturday, April 3, with a
double header in Oakdale, N.Y. They will return to Dobbs
Ferry to conclude their five-game series on Monday, April 5.
The first pitch will be thrown at 3 pm.
