The Mercy College baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader
to East Coast Conference rival C.W. Post. The scores in the
games were 4-2 and 5-0.
In game one, C.W Post scored twice in the top of the seventh to
break the 2-2 tie. Starting pitcher Kenny
Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster CC) ran into trouble in that
inning, putting the first two runners on base. Billy
Dring (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) came in to relieve
Tyson, and surrendered a pair of hits as the Pioneers took the win.
CW Post scored twice in the top of the fourth on three hits.
The inning could have been worse, but was stemmed when short
stop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees) cut off a throw from right fielder Andrew
Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North), and
threw out a Pioneers runner at third.
In the bottom half of that same inning, Ken
Mundy (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North)
doubled to lead off the charge. Julio
Torres (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen South) then singled
and stole second, which brought senior Marc
Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) to the
plate. Dern promptly singled up the middle, plating two,
knotting the score at 2-2.
The score remained tied until the top of the seventh, when the
Pioneers scored two runs on three hits to take the 4-2 win.
In the rubber match, junior southpaw Keith
Kreig (City Island, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy)
took the start and threw six strong innings. He scattered
just two hits, one a bunt single and gave up just one run in the
sixth. Stephen
Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy Trinity) relieved Krieg to
pitch the seventh. Junior infielder Michael
Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach)
went 2-5 in both games and was robbed of a hit on a diving stop by
Zack Graczyk in the 5-0 loss.
With the pair of defeats, the Mavericks now own a 13-24 record
(8-16 ECC) while C.W. Post improves to 25-11-1 (19-5 ECC).
These two teams will meet again on Sunday from Brookville, New
York. The first pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
