Boxscore

Freshman attack Frank Hennenlotter (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) was the savior for the Mercy College men's lacrosse team today, as his goal with just 18 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Mavericks (4-8) a 10-9 win over the host Hawks of St. Anselm (7-5). This was the first ever overtime game in the nascent history of the program.

Also coming up big was freshman goalkeeper T. J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), who made 27 saves between the pipes, several from point-blank range.

St. A's scored just 20 seconds into the game, drawing first blood. Mercy then took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, as Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) scored back-to-back goals. Fellow freshman Sean Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored a man-up goal midway through the second quarter to extend the lead to 4-2. The teams traded goals, and, at the half, the score was 6-5 in favor of the Mavericks.

The action continued back and forth, and Mercy extended the lead to 9-7 after the third.

In the fourth quarter, the hosts were relentless. In the final 15 minutes of regulation, St. A's managed 16 shots, with DiCarlo coming up big several times. In the quarter, he managed 12 saves. However, he also allowed a pair of goals, with the game-tying goal coming at 4:28.

In overtime, DiCarlo again made key saves, keeping the Mavericks alive. Also coming up big defensively was junior Robert Wendel (East Islip, N.Y./Suffolk CC), who gobbled six ground balls and caused six turnovers for the game.

Henenlotter recorded four goals on the afternoon, none of which was bigger than the overtime winner. Marzocca and Wallin each recorded hat tricks. Henenlotter and Wallin each added an assist, while John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) and Marzocca added two helpers apiece.

Mercy returns to action on Saturday, May 1, at Seton Hill at 1:00 p.m.
