The Mercy College baseball team took a short road trip across
the Hudson River to face East Coast Conference rival St. Thomas
Aquinas on Wednesday, and came away with a 5-3 win. This win
helps the Mavericks in the fight for the final playoff spot in the
ECC.
In what was a reversal of fortune of sort, sophomore Billy
Dring (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) made his first start of
the year and went six innings for the win. To continue the
switch, senior southpaw Kenny
Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster C.C.) came out of the
bullpen in a rare relief appearance. Dring allowed three runs
over the six frames. Tyson threw three scoreless innings to
record the save.
Offensively, the Mavericks saw contributions from different
players. The team pushed two runs across on sacrifice flies
from junior infielder Michael
Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach)and sophomore Mike Gianzero (Highland Mills,
N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury). Mercy scored another run when a
Spartan hurler balked with a runner on third.
With the win, Mercy owns a record of 14-25, 9-17 ECC and is tied
in the league standings with Queens and Bridgeport. The trio
all trail Dowling by four games for the final playoff
position. The Spartans and Mavericks return to action on
Friday, April 30, as STAC will make the trip across the Hudson to
face the Mercy in Dobbs Ferry. The first pitch is scheduled
for 3:00 pm.
