The Mercy College softball team swept a doubleheader from
Wilmington University on Thursday in a pair of games played in
Delaware. The scores were 7-2 and 4-0.
Game one started out with the Mavericks scoring twice in the
first inning. Mercy loaded the bases with a single each from
Krissy Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison) and
Paige Cauley (Stratford, N.J./Iona College)
and a walk from Chelsea
Methot (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central). With
the sacks full, freshman Ashley
Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) picked up
an RBI with a single. Cauley came in later in the frame on a
fielding error.
Wilmington scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the
score at 2-2. Mercy took a 3-2 lead in the third when Mehot
scored on a single off the bat of Steph
Owsiany (Edison, N.J./Edison). Johnstone's
second RBI came in the fourth with another single and the Mavericks
took a 4-2 lead into the sixth.
In the sixth, Methot drove in a run with a single and Johnstone
recorded her third RBI of the game on a groundout. Mercy
pushed the seventh run across in the seventh courtesy of a
Courtney Butler (Islip, N.Y./Islip)
sacrifice. The seven runs were more than enough for
Shanna Hicks (Marlboro, N.Y./SUNY New Paltz)
who went the distance for the win. She scattered three hits
and allowed just one earned run.
Game two saw the top of the lineup produce for the Mavericks, as
the top five positions in the batting order collected all nine
Mercy hits. The majority of the runs came in the third as
Kim Curry (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) and
Johnstone singled in base runners. Cait
Rohme (Patchogue, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) drove in the
third run with a bases loaded walk. Starting pitcher
Alex Oakes (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland)
threw the complete game shutout. She allowed just three hits
and struck out four.
The Mercy College softball team returns to action on Saturday,
May 1, as the 2010 season comes to a close with a doubleheader
against Bridgeport. Game one is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
