The Mercy College baseball team dropped a tough 5-2 decision at
Molloy this evening, as Molloy's Robert LaRussa hit a
three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to win it for the
Lions.
Mercy led off the scoring in the top of the second, when three
straight singles led to a single run. It was Marc
Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) who
drove in Julio Torres (Harlingen, Tx./Harlingen
South).
In the bottom of the inning, Molloy plated a pair of runs on
only one hit.
Mercy knotted the game in the top of the third, when Matt
Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys)
grounded out, scoring Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley
Stream North). Bock had reached on an error then stole second, and
advanced to third on a Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees) single.
Senior Steve Merslich (Flushing, N.Y./Francis
Lewis) held the Lions at bay, as he hurled five innings, allowing
four hits and the two runs. Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) threw three innings cleanly, but got into trouble in the
ninth.
In the ninth, Molloy got the leadoff batter on base via error,
before Marsar walked T.J. Greig. Mercy closer Billy
Dring (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) entered the game to
face LaRussa. After a double steal put runners on second and third,
LaRussa homered to left, giving Molloy the win in walk-off fashion.
Molloy takes game one of the five-game set, with game two
scheduled for Thursday, April 8, at Mercy, at 3:30 p.m.
