Senior southpaw Kenny Tyson (Miami, Fla./Ulster
C.C.) pitched a gem on Thursday, helping the Mavericks defeat the
Lions 2-0 in an East Coast Conference game played in Dobbs Ferry,
New York. Tyson surrendered just two hits and struck out six
in going the distance for the shutout win.
Tyson retired the first ten batters of the game before hitting a
batter to give Molloy a base runner in the fourth. Tyson
surrendered a single through the hole on the left side just one
inning later and didn't allow another hit until the ninth
inning.
The Molloy starter, Justin Jorgensen, was nearly as masterful as
Tyson, cruising through the first three innings before running into
trouble in the fourth. The Mavericks loaded the bases in
their half of the frame as Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa,
N.Y./Plainedge) got hit by the pitch. Junior outfielder Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St.
Peter's Boys) then ripped a single that put runners on first
and second. The fifth batter in the lineup, Julio
Torres (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen South) connected on
a single of his own. With the bases loaded, Michael Ferrante (Long Beach,
N.Y./Long Beach) hit into a double play that scored Lauricella to
give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
Mercy added on to their lead in the eighth as Justin Muscarella (Plainedge,
N.Y./Island Trees)started a rally by singling and stealing
second. He advanced on a groundout and scored on
Walsh's third hit of the day. Tyson retired the Lions
in the ninth as the final out came when T.J. Greig singled to right
field and was thrown out by right fielder Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) trying to stretch the hit into a double.
In the victory, Walsh collected three hits and Torres had
two. Tyson didn't allow a base runner to reach third
and the Mavericks laced nine hits. With the win,
Mercy's record is now 9-13, (5-6 ECC) while Molloy dropped to
15-16 (8-4 ECC). The Mavericks have won three out of four
games played on campus this season, and they welcome in
UMass-Lowell on Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for
3:30.
