The Maverick baseball team fought hard, but suffered a 15-12 loss to UMass-Lowell in a 13 inning game on Friday in Dobbs Ferry.  The non-conference matchup was the longest game, in innings played, by the Mavericks this season.  The setback brought Mercy's record to 9-14 and UMass-Lowell sits at 19-12.

The River Hawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead after scoring three times in the second and four times in the third.  Mercy got a run back in their half of the third as catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) connected on a solo home run over the left-field fence.  His first collegiate round tripper made the score 7-1.

UMass-Lowell pushed a run across in the fourth to take an 8-1 edge and in the bottom of the inning, the Mavericks chipped away once again.  After consecutive singles from Michael Grassano (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) and Julio Torres (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen South), Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) drove in Grassano with a single of his own.  With the bases loaded, pinch hitter James Diaz-Paulino (Yonkers, N.Y./Lincoln) ripped an RBI single down the left-field line making the score 8-3.

The Mavericks' bats really came alive in the sixth.  Trailing 9-3, the team sent 11 batters to the plateand scored seven runs in the inning.  The first run came across when outfielder Joe Ganz (Mastic Beach, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) drove in Torres who reached on an error. Dern drove in his second run of the game after Ganz when his base hit to left scored Ferrante.  Later in the inning, Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) plated two more runs with a line drive single to center.  The Mavericks tacked on two runs on outs for the seven in the inning and they took a 10-9 lead into the seventh.

Matt Mareno (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) came out of the bullpen to give the Mavericks five strong inning of relief.  He surrendered a run in the seventh, which Mercy got back in the bottom of the inning courtesy of an RBI single from freshman Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North).

The River Hawks pushed a run across in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 11-11.  They scored one more in the tenth and lead 12-11 heading into the bottom of the inning.  Mercy showed their resilience once again as they answered with a game-tying run.  Freshman Matt Buesser (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) reached on an infield single and later scored on a triple off the bat of Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge).  The game remained scoreless into the thirteenth when UMass-Lowell scored three times and went on to win 15-12.

For the Mavericks, the 12 runs came on 18 hits, including one double, one single and a home run.  Walsh and Dern each drove in two runs and six other hitters had an RBI each.  The two sides combined for 38 hits and 27 runs.  Mercy returns to East Coast Conference play this weekend as they finish a five game series with Molloy.  The rubber game of the set will be at Mavericks Field on Sunday, with the first pitch coming at 1pm.
