The #3 seed Mercy College baseball team had its season come to
an end on Friday afternoon, dropping a 7-3 decision to Molloy in
the East Coast Conference Championships. Mercy (19-28) has now lost
to Molloy on back-to-back days, thus eliminating Mercy from the
Championships.
The #2 Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead, picking up a run
in the first and the second. The Mavericks countered in the
top of the third as Marc Dern (Valley
Stream,N.Y./Valley Stream North), Vinny Tesoriero (Glen Head, N.Y./North
Shore) and Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) all singled to load the bases. Matt
Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys)
then hit a slow roller towards down the first base line, and slid
in to beat the throw, plating Dern with the Mavericks first
run.
Molloy scored twice in the third and once again in the fourth to
take a commanding 5-1 lead. In what has become commonplace
for Mercy, the Mavericks once again fought back. In the top
of the sixth, Julio Torres (Harlingen,
Texas/Harlingen South) laced a single to center and advanced to
second on a bobble by the centerfielder. Two batters later,
Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley
Stream North) singled through the left side to put runners on the
corners. With Dern at bat, Bock stole second. The throw
down to second went into the outfield and Torres dashed home and
made the score 5-2.
With Mercy running low on outs, the team showed inspired play in
the seventh. After Michael Ferrante (Long Beach,
N.Y./Long Beach) worked a walk, Walsh drove him in with a triple to
the wall in right-center to give the Mavericks a third run.
Sophomore Billy Dring (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland)
took the start for the Mavericks and lasted six innings. He
was touched up for five runs on 11 hits. Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) threw the seventh and gave up one run to give Molloy a 6-3
edge heading into the eighth.
The Mavericks threatened in the eighth as Torres ripped a double
into left-center to leadoff. Two batters later, Dern was
robbed of a hit on a diving stop by the second baseman.
Molloy added another run in the eighth and went on to win
7-3. This loss eliminated Mercy from the double elimination
East Coast Conference Baseball Championship.
Molloy advanced to face top-seeded C. W. Post on Saturday.
