Mercy Men's Soccer Earns 2-2 Tie With St. Rose
Box Score Mercy College rallied from behind twice today to secure a 2-2
tie in men's soccer action against the College of St. Rose.
Mercy ran its unbeaten streak to four games, and is now 2-1-2. St.
Rose, meanwhile, is now 1-1-1.
St. Rose opened the scoring just 12 minutes into the contest,
when Liam Barrett passed to Dylan
Klippenstein, who deftly beat Maverick keeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry
College). In the 28th minute, Mercy leveled
the score when Raldino
Powell (Bronx, N.Y./Garvey Maceo) took a pass from Daniele Iamiceli (Ossining,
N.Y./Ossining) and found the back of the net.
Not to be outdone, St. Rose once again took the lead when
Barrett stole the ball away from Mercy and fed Giancarlo
Montenegro, who chipped the ball over the head of
Velazquez-Diaz from 18 yards out. At the intermission, Mercy
trailed 2-1.
Mercy began the second half pressing hard, earning four corner
kicks in the first seven minutes. Finally, in the 77th
minute, the Mavericks were able to break through as Keith Dillon (Dublin, Ireland/Moyle
Park) fed Marko
Loncar (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville), who
knotted the game at 2-2.
In the overtime sessions, Michael Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Blesses
Sacrament) had several good scoring chances, but was
unable to score the game-winner.
Velazquez-Diaz finished the game with four saves. On the back
line, Ben Latchford (Solihull,
England/Sacred Heart College) was
once again a standout.
Mercy returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 15, hosting
Felician College at 2:00 p.m. at White Plains High School.
