Mercy Volleyball Rallies to Upend Assumption 3-1

The Mercy College volleyball team rallied to beat visiting Assumption College on Saturday 3-1. After winning the first set 25-23, Mercy dropped the second 13-25. In the third set, Mercy (3-1) overcame an early deficit and won 25-22, before taking the fourth and decisive set 25-22.

In the opening set, Mercy jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the service of junior Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake). Assumption would keep the match close, even taking the lead late. With Assumption ahead 22-18, senior Mirlusca Montes (Lima Peru/Senor de la Misericordia) served aces for the 20th and 23rd points and Pennelle had the final kill to carry the Mavericks to victory.

In set number two, the Greyhounds (5-4) came out with their own 4-0 lead on the back of the service of Jess Reimers. Leading 9-2, the Greyhounds went on a 5-1 run to gain momentum. Assumption went on to win that set 13-25.

The third set was tightly contested, as both teams fought for control. With the score Assumption 21, Mercy 20, the Mavericks ran off four consecutive points, highlighted by a Montes ace.

The fourth set was back-and-forth, with neither team taking a large lead. Assumption led 16-13 when the Mavericks regrouped. Sophomore Kassy Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) served a pair of aces, and the Mavericks were off and running.

Defensively, the Mavericks recorded a season-high 11 total blocks, led by sophomore Crasheena Ward (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), who had two solo and two assisted blocks. Phillips added one solo and three assists. On the attack, freshman Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) had eight kills, while Pennelle tallied seven. Montes finished with six aces.

For Assumption, Mary Johnston led all players with 14 kills while Lauren Ostafin added ten. Steph Wooten led all players with 13 digs.

Mercy returns to action on Wednesday, September 15, with a trip to East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University. The Mavericks continue on to St. Rose on Saturday, September 18, before returning home next Sunday, September 19, to host Le Moyne College.
