Women's Soccer Levels Record By Beating Post 4-1
Box Score The Mercy College women's soccer team evened its record at
2-2 by trouncing Post University 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman
Shelby Martino (Portola Hills, Calif./El
Toro) led the way with a pair of goals, including the
eventual game-winner which came early in the second half.
The Mavericks opened the game with purpose offensively, and were
called for offsides three times in the first seven minutes.
Finally, Martino was able to break through and score her first goal
of the game at the 11:59 mark. Minutes later, Post tied the score
when Mercy keeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay
Shore) had a ball lobbed over her head and into the
goal. The score would remain tied for the remainder of the half,
despite several good scoring opportunities for the Mavericks.
In the second half, Martino notched her second goal of the game,
when Jesse Childs (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena
Vista) made a delicate pass that Martino easily put
into the corner of the goal. Insurance goals came from Andrea Nash (Katonah, N.Y./Somers),
who put a shot down the center of the goal, and Childs, who took a
lobbed pass over the head of the Post keeper from Jamie Sabel (Pewaukee,
Wisc./UW-Milwaukee) and easily found the back of the
net.
DiLegge finished with three saves on the day.
Mercy returns to action on Sunday, September 19, hosting Dowling
College at noon at Manhattanville College.
