Mercy Men's Soccer Beats Felician 4-1
Box Score The Mercy College men's soccer team held off a feisty Felician
College squad 4-1 today, in a game played at White Plains High
School. In the process, Mercy runs its unbeaten streak to five
games, while Felician remains winless on the season at 0-6.
The Mavericks (3-1-2) began the game on the attack, and scored
the game's first goal barely two minutes in, as Alex
Cruz (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) fed Marko Loncar (Pleasantville,
N.Y./Pleasantville) for the goal. Junior Bujar Lajqi (Bronx, N.Y./Yorktown)
then put the Mavericks up 2-0 with a goal at the 36:20 mark,
converting a cross from Collin Legge (Schodack, N.Y./Maple
Hill).
In the second half, play picked up for both teams, with both
sides hitting the post numerous times. Felician finally hit paydirt
in the 66th minutewhen Mike Azzato hit the post
with his original shot, then collected the rebound and beat the
keeper to cut the lead to 2-1.
Tensions mounted on both sides as the game hung in the balance.
With Felician pressing offensively, Mercy was able to counter for
two goals in the 84th minute, as Michael Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Blessed
Sacrament) set up Hugo
Bernal (Guadalajara, Mexico/Irvington) for the third
Maverick goal, and Lajqi for the fourth.
In goal, Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry
College) made three saves.
Mercy returns to White Plains High School for a Saturday night
match with Dowling College in the East Coast Conference opener. The
game begins at 7:00 p.m.
