Mercy Women's Soccer Drops Hard Fought Game to Dowling 1-0
Box Score The Mercy College women's soccer team fought hard but
dropped the East Coast Conference opener to Dowling College on
Sunday by a 1-0 score. Dowling, the fourth ranked team in the
region, scored the game's lone goal in the 83rd
minute and held on for the victory. Dowling remains unbeaten at
4-0-1 (1-0 ECC), while Mercy is now 2-3 (0-1 ECC).
In the first half, both teams had chances, but could not
convert. With
the game only a few minutes old, Dowling's Dayna
Galli managed several shots, but could not score. Then, in
the 30th minute, Mercy's Alison Mrowinski (Syracuse,
N.Y./Solvay) hit the post with a rocket, then gathered
the rebound, but had her second attempt blocked in front.
As play moved to the second half, the pace quickened. Both teams
frantically moved up and down the field, trying to create scoring
opportunities. Finally, at the 82:11 mark, Dowling's
Karen Endresen took a direct kick from above the
box and beat Mercy's Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay
Shore) for the game's only goal.
For the game, Dowling managed 10 shots, Mercy 8. Mercy had two
corners, both coming in the second stanza.
The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, September 23,
heading to Nyack College for a 3:00 p.m. start.
