Mercy Volleyball Falls to Dowling 3-0
Box Score The Mercy College volleyball team lost to Dowling College this
evening, 3-0, in the East Coast Conference opener for both schools.
Set scores were 25-6, 25-5, 25-12. Dowling remains perfect with a
9-0 record (1-0 ECC), while Mercy falls to 3-5 (0-1 ECC).
The game was the ECC's annual Respect game, where a special
emphasis was placed on sportsmanship.
In the first set, the Golden Lions roared out to a 6-0 lead on
three kills from Monika Kasperek. Freshman Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine
Bush) recorded Mercy's first point, but it only
served as a brief interruption, as Dowling extended its lead to
13-1. Dowling would go on to win the set 25-6.
Mercy jumped out to an early lead in the second set, only to
have Dowling stem the tide and regain control. With the score 9-4
in favor of Dowling, the Golden Lions exploded, claiming the set
25-5. Megan Futch served the final 13 points for
Dowling.
Set three saw Mercy rally, but it would not be enough. Once
again under the service of Futch, Dowling rallied, this time for
ten consecutive points.
For the evening, Dowling hit a whopping .630 as a team, with 38
kills on 54 attempts. For Mercy, Gebhardt led the
way with five kills and a pair of digs. Sophomores Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside,
N.Y./Oceanside) and Kassy Phillips (Camillus,
N.Y./Camillus) had five assists apiece.
For Dowling, Patrycja Klekotka and
Janae Giles each had eight kills, while
Maja Potpara added 26 assists.
Mercy embarks on a two week, four city, six match road trip. The
first of those dates is Saturday, September 25, with a tri-match at
Wilmington (Del.) University with Post University.
