The Mercy College volleyball team lost to Dowling College this evening, 3-0, in the East Coast Conference opener for both schools. Set scores were 25-6, 25-5, 25-12. Dowling remains perfect with a 9-0 record (1-0 ECC), while Mercy falls to 3-5 (0-1 ECC).

The game was the ECC's annual Respect game, where a special emphasis was placed on sportsmanship.

In the first set, the Golden Lions roared out to a 6-0 lead on three kills from Monika Kasperek. Freshman Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) recorded Mercy's first point, but it only served as a brief interruption, as Dowling extended its lead to 13-1. Dowling would go on to win the set 25-6.

Mercy jumped out to an early lead in the second set, only to have Dowling stem the tide and regain control. With the score 9-4 in favor of Dowling, the Golden Lions exploded, claiming the set 25-5. Megan Futch served the final 13 points for Dowling.

Set three saw Mercy rally, but it would not be enough. Once again under the service of Futch, Dowling rallied, this time for ten consecutive points.

For the evening, Dowling hit a whopping .630 as a team, with 38 kills on 54 attempts. For Mercy, Gebhardt led the way with five kills and a pair of digs. Sophomores Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) and Kassy Phillips (Camillus, N.Y./Camillus) had five assists apiece.

For Dowling, Patrycja Klekotka and Janae Giles each had eight kills, while Maja Potpara added 26 assists.

Mercy embarks on a two week, four city, six match road trip. The first of those dates is Saturday, September 25, with a tri-match at Wilmington (Del.) University with Post University.
