Mercy Men's Soccer Loses at UB on Golden Goal

The Mercy College men's soccer lost a heart-breaking overtime match today at the University of Bridgeport, 1-0. UB scored the game-winning goal 4:22 into the first overtime session, sending the Purple Knights to 4-3 overall, including a 2-0-0 mark in the East Coast Conference. Mercy, meanwhile, falls to 3-3-2 overall, and 0-2-0 in the ECC.

UB had a corner kick that extra session that lead to the goal. The ball was sent into the box, where it was headed by Clayton Ulmer, who sent the ball to teammate Lee Middleton, who headed it past Mercy keeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Waldon, N.Y./Newberry College).

Velazquez-Diaz would finish with seven saves for Mercy. Michael Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Blessed Sacrament) had five shots to lead the Mavericks.

Mercy returns to action on Sunday, October 3, heading to Queens College at noon.
