The Mercy College women's soccer team thoroughly dominated an inexperienced St. Thomas Aquinas College team today, winning 3-0 in a non-conference game played in Purchase, N.Y. Mercy is 1-0 on the season, while STAC falls to 0-2.

The Mavericks came out aggressive, and never relented, accumulating committing 12 fouls in the first half. Mercy went for the goal from the onset, but were caught offsides twice early on. Junior Jamie Sabel (Pewaukee, Wisc./UW-Milwaukee) was the first of several Mavericks to hit the post today, just above the out-stretched hand of Jeanette Gibson, the STAC keeper. Minutes later, as the Mavericks continued to press, freshman Shelby Martino (Portola Hills, Calif./El Toro) was hauled down in the box by STAC's Nicole Biolsi, resulting in a penalty kick for Mercy. Newcomer Caitlin McKenna (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) took the PK, and subtly deposited the ball in the net with the first goal of her collegiate career.

Just minutes later, in the 26th minute, Alison Mrowinski (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) hit the post, and the rebound came right to the feet of Jackie Karras (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East), who found the far corner of the goal for a 2-0 Mavericks lead.

Early in the second half, Mercy scored the third and final goal of the game when Jackie Sabel (Pewaukee, Wisc./UW-Milwaukee) took a pass from Mrowinski and scored.

For the game, Mercy out-shot STAC (21-6), had more corners (9-1), and more fouls (15-13). Leading the barrage for the Mavs were Mrowinski, Karras and Jackie Sabel, who each had six shots. In goal, sophomore Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) made two saves, one coming in each half.

Mercy travels to the Albany area on Monday to face St. Rose at 1:00 p.m. St. Rose is ranked #3 in the country in the NSCAA Preseason poll.
