Mercy Volleyball Rolls to 3-1 Win in Season Opener

The Mercy College volleyball team opened the season with a win
today, beating Goldey-Beacom College 3-1. Goldey-Beacom took the
first set 25-22, before the Mavericks rolled in the next three,
winning 25-13, 25-18, and 25-12. It was the season opener for both
teams.
In the first set, Mercy jumped out early to a 9-4 lead,
and extended it to 12-8, only to have Goldey-Beacom respond
and tie the score at 13-13 on a Roni Shaner
service ace. The Lightning would not relinquish the lead, holding
on for a 25-22 win.
The second set began evenly, with the score tied at 2-2.
Freshman Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine
Bush) would record three consecutive kills for Mercy
as the Mavericks took a 5-2 lead. The Lightning responded, and
knotted the game again, this time at 6-6.The game stayed close
until a Bridgette Pinelle (Hawthorne,
N.Y./Westlake) kill forced a Goldey-Beacom time out.
With the score 15-13 in favor of Mercy, sophomore Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside,
N.Y./Oceanside) came to serve. Mercy ran off ten
consecutive points and took the win 25-13.
Game three showed Goldey-Beacom jump out to an early
lead, then extend it to 9-6. A Mercy timeout and a Gebhardt kill
swung momentum to the hometown team. Freshman Nicole Pepe(East Meadow, N.Y./East
Meadow) had a big kill at 16-12, followed by a Pepe/Crasheena Ward (Danbury,
Conn./Danbury) block, as the Mavs extended the lead to
17-13. But the Lightning responded with Monica
Dempsey serving, narrowing the margin to 17-16. Gebhardt
then took charge, and smashed a kill to set the tone, as Mercy ran
to the 25-18 win.
In the fourth and final set, Mercy took command early and never
lost the lead, taking the 25-12 win.
For the match, Gebhardt led all players with 22 kills and a .341
hitting percentage. Lynch had 37 assists, while Mirlusca Montes (Lima, Peru/Senior de la
Misericordia) had 18 digs, both of which were
game-highs.
Goldey-Beacom beat St. Anselm 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22)
in the second match today. Mercy will face St. Anselm this
afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
