Mercy Men's Soccer Sweeps Weekend, Beats GBC 2-0
Box Score The Mercy College men's soccer team ran its win streak to
two games by defeating Goldey-Beacom College 2-0 today, in a game
played in West Chester, Pa. The Mavericks (2-1) defeated #15
Wilmington (Del.) University a day ago.
From the start, the Mavericks were aggressive. Just 3:13 into
the game, the Blue and White took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Alex Cruz (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) took
a pass from Jason Schobert (New Paltz, N.Y./SUNY Ulster
) and beat Ignacio Farias, the GBC
keeper. Later in the half, in the 24th minute, Cruz set
up classmate Alex Redmond (Irvington,
N.Y./Irvington), who added an insurance goal.
Goldey-Beacom (0-2) had opportunities late in the second half,
with two corner kicks late in the first half, but the Lightning
could not put the ball on goal.
For the first half, Mercy carried play, peppering the Lightning
with ten shots. The aggressive play led Mercy to five corner kicks
in the first 45 minutes.
Senior Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry
College) earned his second shutout in as many days,
making three saves on the afternoon.
Mercy College returns to Pennsylvania on Wednesday, September 8,
for a 4:00 p.m. game at Holy Family University.
