Mercy Men's Soccer Knots Holy Family 1-1
Box Score The Mercy College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw
with Holy Family on Thursday, September 8, in a game played in
Philadelphia, Pa. Mercy, now 2-1-1, runs its unbeaten streak to
three games, while Holy Family is 2-0-1.
Holy Family opened the game in grand fashion, scoring in just
the third minute, as Dennis Park fed Jason Lopez for the score.
Mercy would level the score in the 75th minute, when
junior
Collin Legge (Schodack, N.Y./Maple
Hill) scored on an unbelievable direct free kick from
40 yards out.
In the second overtime, senior goalkeeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry
College) came up big with five minutes remaining,
making a key save.
With just 15 seconds remaining that second extra session, Mercy
had a phenomenal opportunity to win the game. Legge dribbled past
three defenders along the end line and fed sophomore Alex Redmond (Irvington,
N.Y./Irvington) in front of the goal. Redmond was just
six yards from winning the game, but Mark Ferretti, HFU's
keeper, made a remarkable save to keep the game tied.
Junior Jason Schobert (New Paltz, N.Y./Ulster
CC) played well defensively for Mercy, shutting down
HFU's best forward. Classmate Keith
Dillon (Dublin, Ireland/Moyle Park) also played well
defensively in support of Velazquez-Diaz, who made seven saves.
The Mavericks will travel to the Albany area on Saturday,
September 11, for a 6:30 p.m. game at the College of St. Rose.
