The Mercy College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Holy Family on Thursday, September 8, in a game played in Philadelphia, Pa. Mercy, now 2-1-1, runs its unbeaten streak to three games, while Holy Family is 2-0-1.

Holy Family opened the game in grand fashion, scoring in just the third minute, as Dennis Park fed Jason Lopez for the score.

Mercy would level the score in the 75th minute, when junior Collin Legge (Schodack, N.Y./Maple Hill) scored on an unbelievable direct free kick from 40 yards out.

In the second overtime, senior goalkeeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry College) came up big with five minutes remaining, making a key save.

With just 15 seconds remaining that second extra session, Mercy had a phenomenal opportunity to win the game. Legge dribbled past three defenders along the end line and fed sophomore Alex Redmond (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) in front of the goal. Redmond was just six yards from winning the game, but Mark Ferretti, HFU's keeper, made a remarkable save to keep the game tied.

Junior Jason Schobert (New Paltz, N.Y./Ulster CC) played well defensively for Mercy, shutting down HFU's best forward. Classmate Keith Dillon (Dublin, Ireland/Moyle Park) also played well defensively in support of Velazquez-Diaz, who made seven saves.

The Mavericks will travel to the Albany area on Saturday, September 11, for a 6:30 p.m. game at the College of St. Rose.
