Mercy Volleyball Falls to Local Rival Pace 3-0
Box Score The Mercy College volleyball team dropped its first match of the
season, falling to local rival Pace 3-0. Set scores were 25-17,
25-17, and 25-11. Pace improves to 3-1 on the season, while Mercy
is 2-1.
The first set was hard fought, and close throughout. With the
score
tied at ten points apiece, Pace's Victoria Pompilus put down
a kill that would give the Setters a lead that they would not
relinquish. Pompilus hit .833 in the set, with five kills.
Sophomore Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside,
N.Y./Oceanside) had four kills and two assists to lead
Mercy.
The second set was also tight with back-and-forth action.
Midway, Pace held a slim 14-13 lead. The Setters then went on an
11-4 run to claim the set, sparked by Pompilus and Sianna Johnson.
Pace hit .424 in the second set, while Mercy hit .143.
In the third set, Mercy's Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine
Bush), the reigning ECC Rookie of the Week, recorded
several kills early, keeping the score tight. Mercy would keep the
score close at 10-7, but get no closer.
For the match, Gebhardt led the Mavericks with seven kills and
six digs. Senior Mirlusca Montes (Lima, Peru/Senor de la
Misericordia) added six digs, while Lynch finished
with 11 assists. For Pace, Nora Rugova and Johnson each had 12
kills, while Pompilus contributed 11. Shea Hansen totaled 36
assists while Rugova and Elyse Rowland each had nine digs.
Mercy returns to action on Saturday, September 11, hosting
Assumption College at 1:00 p.m.
