Men's Basketball Drops ECC Matchup to Dowling, 92-83
Mercy College men's basketball dropped their East Coast
Conference matchup tonight against Dowling College in Dobbs Ferry,
92-83. The Mavericks, now 0-12 including 0-7 in the ECC,
continue to look for their first win, while the Golden Lions
improve to 3-9, including 3-4 in the ECC.
Poor shooting by Mercy to begin the game gave Dowling the 11-2
lead to start. The Mavericks pushed back as play
continued. Five straight points by senior Manny
Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) brought the
score to 19-17 and the Mavericks within two. Dowling, who
out-scored Mercy 28-12 in the paint in the first half, were able to
extend their lead to as many as 11 points. The Golden Lions
led 42-35 going into the second half.
The second half saw more of the same play. Mercy scored
six straight points and with around six minutes to go, a layup by
sophomore Jerrell
Lawrence (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) brought the
score to 71-63, and the Mavericks within eight. That would be
as close as Mercy would get. Dowling went on to win the game,
92-83.
Garcia had a double-double for the Mavericks and led his team in
both points (20) and rebounds (11). Senior Hasan
Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Central) had 14 points.
Sophomore Colin
Senior (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) and senior
Ed Wilson (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Catholic)
each added 12 points. Senior also grabbed nine
rebounds. Dowling's Michael Hall led all players with
30 points, and Corwin Austin and Josh Malone had 18 points and 17
points, respectively, for the Golden Lions.
The Mavericks head to C.W. Post for an ECC matchup this Thurs.,
Jan. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., following the
women's game at 5:00 p.m.
